December 21, 2012 is a date coinciding with the ending of the Mayan long-count calendar as well as a number of other astronomical events that are suppose to occur on the date. The Mayans were highly skilled and advanced mathematicians and astrononmers, and developed and lived by a 13 month calendar that was pricesly synchronized and in tune with the cosmic and natural cycles of our own Milky Way galaxy; so much so that they knew and were able to calculate with precision the dates of solar eclipses ages before they actually happened and also the date of a nearly 26,000 year long astronomical cycle, called the Great Cylce or precision of the equinoxes, that would come to a full completion during the winter solstice on the date according to the Mayan long count date 13.0.0.0.0, or according to our calendar, December 21, 2012. This 26,000 year cycle is then broken down into 5 smaller cycles with periods of 5,125 years in each period, and then further broken down within the period into 13 more smaller cycles, called the baktun cycle, each lasting approximately 394 years. We are currently in the 13th and last cycle according to the baktun cycle, which began in 1618 and is scheduled to come to an end in 2012. Not only that, but December 21, 2012 also coincides with the date of the galactic alignment of the December solstice sun with the Galactic equator, an alignment of the Earth, Sun, and the Milky Way center at what is known as the "Dark Rift". This alignment will place our Sun in direct alignment with the Galactic equator, a process of the revolution of the Sun orbiting the center of the Milky Way galaxy that takes approximately 225 million years to complete.
